PSYCHOACOUSTICS COLLECTIVE – HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHIES

Psychoacoustics came into existence on Dec. 25, 1991 when the hosts of the Grateful Dead show needed a holiday substitute. Though not Dead aficionados, they served the audience an eclectic and well-received selection of cerebral, psychedelic sounds from many musical eras, including spoken word and layered music mixes. Soon the hosts had a weekly time slot, an hour of which is dedicated to bringing the Church of the SubGenius radio ministry to WORT via the "Hour of Slack." Psychoacoustics has moved through different weekdays and time slots and changed co-hosts over the years, but the concept has remained constant: "a head trip through the decades" with a healthy dose of politics, humor and modern counterculture sensibilities.

Rev. Velveteen, co-founder of the Show, has been in radio for over a quarter of a century. Her favorite part is taking to the airwaves to blow the minds of listeners. She also handles the business end of the schtick, and for fun she’s a mascot for roller derby as well as a music collector, writer, photographer, and globetrotting slacktivist.

Father Angus is one of the founding members of the Psychoacoustics collective, which was spawned on Christmas Day, 1991, in much the same manner as another savior of the human race. When he hasn’t been wreaking radio havoc on WORT, he has worked in the publishing and translation industries and also writes various things on the side. For fun he grows orchids and cacti, plays with a python, and casts spells on unsuspecting neighbors.

Bad Sister Heidi has been a part of the Psychoacoustics collective from almost the very beginning. In her other life she is an HIV prevention educator at AIDS Network and with the Vaudeville Vixens of the Mad Rollin' Dolls roller derby league.

Brother Selector started with the collective by hosting a Ska show every first Thursday of the month. He now presides over every fifth Thursday with an eclectic mix of rock, hip hop, reggae and, yes, ska music as well as the Hour of Slack. He also DJs around town, most notably on Thursdays at Jolly Bob’s where he is known as Natural Selector, part of the Formula Sound System, spinning reggae, dancehall, ska, reggaeton and dub.

WORT-FM is a non-commercial, listener sponsored, member controlled community radio station broadcasting to south central Wisconsin. The station’s mission says they “provide quality programming and services to a broad spectrum of the community through…challenge of the cultural and intellectual assumptions of our listeners through unique and diverse programming.” The program “Psychoacoustics” certainly fulfills this objective, and plans to continue doing so for the unforeseeable future. For more information about WORT and its programming, contact Sybil Augustine, Music Director at (608) 256-9678.

Ah, glorious December....

It's unconscionably cold outside, but all three members of the collective are in the lab, I mean, studio, tonight. Fr. Angus may run home to make sure that none of his experiments have escaped and eaten the neighbors, and Rev. Velveteen may have some agenda unknown to any but herself, but fear not! Bad Sister Heidi is in control of the show--and your mind. Batten your hatches or fatten your matches as you see fit. Your fate is sealed.

When shall we three meet again?

In thunder, lightning, or in rain? Well, rain anyway. Madison is shrouded in rain and mist, and spirits emerge to guide us and teach us and, occasionally, drag one of us screaming into a parallel universe to be gnawed by monsters and demons forever. I love this time of year.

Happy Halloween or Somber Samhain, as you will.

We thank all of you for our f a n t a s t i c success during the Crashing the Ether pledge drive!!

Now prepare to be assumed into the spirit world and shown marvels and horrors beyond the power of your mere organic brain to comprehend.

Rocktober!! (and Rocktember and Rockvember...)

This evening's experiment is being conducted under the close watch of Father Angus and Bad Sister Heidi; the Reverend Velveteen is off getting off somewhere. We feature music by groups, bands, artists, collectives, or random lunatics who have managed to secure gigs in and around Madison, Wisconsin, in the weeks and months to come (or that have just played here, as in the case of the Melvins). Of course, we are insane, so at any moment we could decide to switch tactics and feature Carmen Miranda.

September Cometh All Over Uth

This evening's experiment, conducted under the "strict" supervision of Bad Sister Heidi, finds your ears mangled in a most delightful way as she wends her wanton ways down the primrose path of her multifariously funky musical sensibility. Reverend Velveteen is striding purposefully in and out of the studio, and Father Angus is typing and grinning and attempting to get a CD or album in here or there, with little luck...BS Heidi seems to have her playlist all thunk out. Vote early...Vote often....Vote FREAKY!

It is I, Bad Sister Heidi, here to strongly encourage you to vote for your (or my) favorites to be on Pants Off Dance Off, "the stupidest show on television" (according to the TV Guide), on Fuse TV. Fuse is a music video channel found at the end of the rest of the music video channels, if you are serviced by Charter.

Anyway, my reason for this call to arms to get our freaky, fantstic, fans voting is this...all the top vote getters right now (except for Brian and Marsha) are BORING!! I'm sorry, but if you have the body of a stripper, or are a stripper, you have PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY to take your clothes off in public. And to be honest, professionals are BORING!! We all already know how they will dance, spins, shaking, thrusts, and a whole lot of pouty, sexy looks. SNORE! Plus, just about all the top vote getters are women, and I'm tired of seeing mostly naked women on television. I DEMAND BEEFCAKE!!! And I bet you do too...

Anyway, please visit Fuse TV by clicking on any one of the links in this message, vote for your favorites to be Pants Off Dance Off dancers and keep listening to WORT for all your psychoacoustic needs.

Your friend, and mine,
Bad Sister Heidi!

From the Wikipedia:

Psychoacoustics and music

Psychoacoustics includes many subjects and produces discoveries which are relevant to music and its composition and performance, and some musicians, such as Benjamin Boretz, consider the results or some of the results of psychoacoustics to be meaningful only in a musical context.

That's today's linguistics lesson. Stay tuned to 89.9 fm in Madison or wortfm.org on Thursday nights 8-11 pm Central Time for your psychoacoustic experiments.

NOTE! Next week will find all three Psychoacousticians conducting a private experiment of their own that will actually be part of a larger experiment performed by Ween at the Orpheum Theater. Your ears and fragile minds will be in the more-than-capable hands of Your Leopard Print Lounge Hostess aka Jenni Schwaner Ladd; she will wreck them just fine. August 10, 2006, will see us back in action.

Bad Sister Heidi is in control this evening, and she's womanning the mixing board here in the studio as well, spinning sexy/funky/trippy/rockin' happy-fun-party-time music.
